Protective Eyewear - Did you know?!? All squash players who satisfy the Squash Australia age eligibility requirements for 19 years and all younger age group competitions, must wear Protective Eyewear properly over their eyes (which meets or exceeds the frontal impact requirements of AS4066:1992 or ASTM F803) whenever they are participating in any tournament, other competition, coaching clinic, or any other squash related activity which has been organised or sanctioned by Squash Australia and/or any of its member Associations or affiliates. Where can you get Protective Eyewear in Victoria?!? Most squash venues around Victoria sell protective eyewear (some will even let you borrow a pair from the centre when you play). It is important that you check that the brand you buy complies with the Squash Australia Protective Eyewear Policy. Check their website for an up to date list of brands which comply and where to get them. For further information regarding protective eyewear and to view the full Protective Eyewear Policy please visit the Squash Australia website.
Researchers from Monash University and the University of Wollongong, in conjunction with the Victorian Squash Federation, have completed a further study to determine factors associated with protective eyewear used by squash players. This group also wanted to find out - what adult players think about protective eyewear. Appropriate protective eyewear is a proven effective measure to prevent eye injuries in squash. However, few players choose to wear eyewear and often the eyewear they choose to wear does not provide suitable protection. Given the great potential for preventing eye injuries with protective eyewear, the reasons why squash players do or do not wear this eyewear is of importance. Players' attitudes and actual behaviours in relation to protective eyewear will be determined followed by an intervention based upon these initial results and similar research undertaken. The overall aim of this intervention is to decrease the incidence of eye injuries in squash by increasing the use of appropriate protective eyewear. In addition, the study will explore the social factors that promote, support the use of appropriate protective eyewear. Adult squash players' injury rates, playing habits, protective eyewear wearing behaviours, attitudes and safety knowledge will be monitored before and after the intervention. Squash venue policies and practices will also be evaluated pre and post intervention. The success of the intervention will be measured by the increased use of appropriate protective eyewear amongst players. The venues taking part in this study are Gardenvale, Knox Bayswater, Moorabbin and MSAC. This two year study is funded by a research grant from the National Health and Medical Council and the Chief investigators are: A/Prof Caroline Finch, Monash University; Prof Neville Owen, The University of Wollongong; Dr Catherine McCarty, Marshfield Medical Research Foundation; Mr Paul Vear, Victorian Squash Federation.
