2008 Mountain Districts Open Squash Championships, held 1-3 February

The first Victorian Grand Prix Championship for 2008 was the 43rd running of the Mountain Districts Squash Championships, an event steeped in history.
For the previous 42 years, this event had been held at the Ringwood Squash Centre, but following its closure mid 07, the Maroondah Squash Club found a new home at Genesis Fitness Centre in Wantirna who also became the major sponsor for this years event.
The Open event spoils were shared by 5 times world open champion, Sarah Fitz-Gerald who took out her 7th Mountain District title and Matthew Kawalski who recently moved to Victoria to be in the VIS Squash Program, who won his first Mountain District title.
Kawalski won the Men's Open without losing a game, although there were 2 close calls in the final where he defeated fellow VIS athlete, Steve Robinson 9/7, 9/2, 9/8.
In their respective semi finals, Kawalski defeated Rex Hedrick 9/0, 9/0, 9/4 and Robinson defeated Neeraj Aggarwal 9/2, 9/2, 9/5.
With a 20 strong field in the Men's draw, matches commenced on Friday evening, and being a PSA Closed Satellite event provided valuable rankings points for many world tour players.
Once again, Fitz-Gerald dominated the Women's Open defeating Di Desira in an entertaining final 9/6, 9/3, 9/0.
In the semi finals, Fitz-Gerald defeated Vanessa Pickerd 9/0, 9/4, 9/1 with Desira defeating Melody Francis 9/3, 9/4, 9/6.
